Blossoming Beauty:

A Glimpse into What We're Growing at Breemar Flower Farm

Welcome to Breemar Flower Farm, where the earth and our family's love come together to cultivate blooms that will bring joy to you and yours. Our farm is a labor of love, and I am thrilled to give you a sneak peek at the rows of flowers that will soon grace our fields.

The star of the show:

Peonies

The Perennial Stars:

At the heart of our farm are peonies. These lush, fragrant beauties steal the show every spring. From the classic Sarah Bernhardt to the unique Etched Salmon, our peonies come in shades of pink, yellow, white, peach, coral, and red. Their slow, three-year journey to full production is a testament to the beauty of patience. I have 145 plants due to arrive in two weeks! This has me experiencing all the feels, from excitement to fear and overwhelm. I’m so glad that I have you to help me not feel so alone in this new, very big adventure!

Varietal Showcase:

I am growing a variety of the most popular peony colors, such as Lemon Chiffon and Etched Salmon. Pictures and a more detailed description of all these beauties can be found here. Each has its own story and unique charm. I’m also going to attempt to grow poppies again (I failed twice last year). I’ve found poppies to be incredibly elusive so far. I haven’t dug up the secret to growing success with them yet, but I will. I am inspired by our daughter Marcie Jo's birth flower and know that poppies will add a touch of graceful elegance to our farm. Poppies prefer a cooler climate so I’m hoping we can get some bloom overlap with the peonies. Some other Spring favorites will be Sweet Peas (pictured on the left). I grew Sweet Peas for the first time last year and boy did they thrive.

Their smell is intoxicating. The more I cut them the more flowers they produced. Incredible! I have some unique new varieties to try from Floret Farm that I’m really excited about too! I’ve linked her shop, if you’d like to try your hand at growing them on your own. While the peonies are my main focus, I’ll be offering other Spring blooms such as specialty Daffodils and Tulips while I’m patiently waiting for the real star of the show.

Nurtured by Nature:

Virginia's native plants hold a special place in our hearts. Just like us, they thrive here, blooming heavily from spring through summer. Their resilience and connection to the land are a source of inspiration. I am busy researching which native, perennial plants will make the best cut flowers and foliage. And I have to strategically plan and plant ones that will bloom during the short Spring peony season. Right now, I am thinking about those larger trees and shrubs that will be the backbone of my home’s landscape and also serve the farm. Good foliage producers like viburnum, ninebark, raspberries, and blueberries are the first to come to mind. Shoot me an email, if you have suggestions for spring blooms or great natives for foliage. I’d love to hear from you.

The Journey Ahead:

As the seasons turn, we eagerly anticipate the beauty yet to come this Fall. Fall is when things happen behind the scenes to ensure we can find rest during winter and provide loads of blooms to you in Spring. We are dedicated to bringing you the finest, sustainably grown flowers, nurtured with love and care.

Thank you for joining us on this blossoming adventure. As we continue to grow, we look forward to sharing the ever-changing beauty of our farm with you. Stay tuned for more updates. Next week, I’ll share an encouraging message about how my black thumb turned into a green thumb.

Keep Blooming,

Nicole Dillon
